Joe Lampton is desperate to escape his working class roots. Setting his sights high, Joe seduces the daughter of a wealthy industrialist, putting aside his passionate feelings for Alice, a married older woman. When tragedy strikes, Joe reflects whether life at the top is worth the sacrifice of true happiness.
